225 Photography {the blog}

I am a natural light lifestyle and portrait photographer based out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  Here you'll see some of my favorites from sessions with clients, some of my personal work and on occasion personal nonsense.

I'm Amanda.  Crazy about my husband, our four kids, and photography.  I love my job and feel so ridiculously blessed to have so much fun while working.  I love every aspect of photography from portraits to street to still life so poke around, check it out and hopefully you'll find something interesting.

I am accepting Senior Rep applications for the class of 2011 from all high schools in East Baton Rouge, West Feliciana, and Ascension Parishes. I will be accepting 2-3 Senior Reps from each school.

To qualify:
* You must be graduating in 2011.
* You must be willing to sign a contract with 225 Photography and be willing to show off your photos and let fellow students know about my work.

As a Senior Rep you will receive:
* Your choice of a full session (session fee is waived – no prints included) at up to 4 locations and unlimited clothing changes or your choice of two mini sessions (April/May and August/September).
* Ten web sized/watermarked images for your Facebook or MySpace page. You must use one of these images as your profile pic through February of 2011.
* Fifty custom referral cards with your image on them.

Senior Reps will earn print credit for every senior session they refer that books and completes a session. If you’re interested in being a Senior Rep, email me (amanda@ twotwofive.com) for your Senior Rep application. After you fill out your application, email me two recent snapshots of you. Remember, I’ll only be taking 2-3 Reps from each high school so space is limited! Applications will be accepted through February 22nd. If you’re chosen you’ll hear from me by Saturday, February 27th. Good luck!

q + a | baton rouge lifestyle photographer

I receive lots of emails wondering what exactly lifestyle photography is, what my images look like before I edit them, a couple of people have asked how I do my editing, why I watermark the images on my blog, a question about my pricing, and I even had one email wanting to know what kind of perfume I wear! Since I’ve been bad about letting these emails sit in my inbox, I’ll do my best to answer them here. Here goes:

What exactly is lifestyle photography?

I don’t think there is just one answer to this so I’ll do my best to give you what I think lifestyle photography is. Lifestyle photography is a very laid back style of shooting. I usually meet my clients at their home or the location they chose. I use natural light so no flashes, no backdrops, just me and my camera so my clients are able to relax. I will do a few posed shots if the mom requests them but for the majority of the session I interact with the children – watching, observing, following them, watching the light and watching the background so that I can control every single shot. Lifestyle photography captures true moments, the way you will remember your child. I love nothing better than shooting children and families enjoying some of their favorite things together: picnics in the backyard, making pancakes on lazy Sunday mornings complete with pjs, tea parties, Saturday afternoon trips for ice cream and a walk around LSU’s campus.

Editing:

I edit all my images in Light Room and then in Photoshop. I was asked to show a before and after image so here you go! This image was shot on a rather overcast afternoon so SOOC (straight out of the camera) it is rather dull:

After:

I have a DSLR. Why don’t my pictures look like yours?

Well, first things first: learn your camera. You can take great pictures with any camera if you understand how to use your camera and if you understand light. For starters I’d suggest you learn to take your camera off automatic and learn to shoot in manual. I will be offering a workshop this summer for people that want to learn to use their cameras whether it is a point and shoot or a DSLR. If this is something you’d be interested in, email me!

Why do I watermark my images?

I watermark the images I show on my blog to prevent them being downloaded, scanned and printed. They are copyright protected and should not be reproduced in any way, shape or form and yet it happens and that is stealing. A colleague had a client that swiped images from her blog, had them printed and then called the photographer to complain about the poor quality! Images posted on the web are 72dpi (lower quality to allow for webpages to load more quickly) while the images I send to the lab for printing are 300dpi.

Pricing.

Yes, I know there is a photographer in town that will sell a disk of images for $250. Yes, I know that you could go to XYZ studio and get a lot of prints for $49.99.

That photographer is either portfolio building or is seriously under priced. My prices are in line with PPA standards and are non-negotiable. When you eat dinner at a restaurant, do you negotiate the price of your meal? Do you negotiate the price of a pair of pants before you buy them? I appreciate that John Doe will sell you the entire digital collection for $250 but I stand firmly behind my work and believe you do get what you pay for.

In regards to the studio, I realize that there are more inexpensive ways to have your family photographed. I do not offer the studio experience. I offer custom photography. You can read more about what custom photography is here and better understand why the custom photography experience is more expensive.

I’ve been asked if I have a minimum purchase requirement. At this time I don’t but I am seriously considering it. A la carte prices are premium prices. Packages are discounted significantly. Occasionally I run a special which you can find out about through the 225 Photography fan page on Facebook.

And the perfume question.
Sweet M, the day I saw you I was wearing Kat Von D’s Sinner. It isn’t my usual but I received a deluxe sample at Sephora and love it. Thanks for asking my dear!

If anyone else has questions, leave them in the comments or email me. I’ll do another q+a soon. Don’t forget to become a fan Facebook — you’ll be the first to know about specials and contests!

modeling opportunity | baton rouge lifestyle photographer

I am always looking for models to try out new ideas and for the occasional commercial project so I’ve decided to start a waiting list for those interested in taking advantage of this opportunity.

I am particularly interested in newborns, young children, and teen girls but if you or your child(ren) don’t fit into those age groups it doesn’t mean you won’t be put on the waiting list. Models of all ages should have a fun personality, not be camera shy, and younger children should be able to listen to directions and not be prone to tantrums. To be considered for upcoming model calls, please email the model/child’s name, age, and a recent photo (preferably headshot) to amanda {AT} twotwofive {DOT} com. Models are compensated for their time with a $100 print credit and the session fee of $150 is waived. Additional prints may be purchased at a la carte prices. The model (or parent/guardian if a minor) must sign a full model release and be able to travel to the session (usually in Baton Rouge or the surrounding area). Serious inquires only. Please understand that only those who send the requested information will be considered and put on the waiting list.

I am always looking for new shooting locations. If you have an interesting piece of property or location suggestion, I’d love to hear from you! I would love to find a farm, barn (even an old barn), a field, horses, a home with a grand porch, courtyard, pool, etc. for a session. Please contact me to further discuss the details. Thank you!

news | baton rouge lifestyle photographer

I realize this blog has been rather quiet lately. After the craziness of Christmas I find myself welcoming that slow period that most photographers experience until Spring arrives. I’m spending this time hanging out with my husband and the kidlets since I know that Spring will be very busy for me (March is booking fast!). I limited my sessions in January and have spent the time refocusing my goals for 225 Photography and looking forward to the year ahead. Things will continue to be quiet around here as I do some behind the scenes work to be ready for the new year. Coming soon will be my What to Wear Guide, a Senior Rep program (I’ll begin accepting applications for Senior Reps – graduating class of 2011 – beginning in February so details on that will be coming soon), new model calls, and possibly Spring mini-sessions if there is enough interest. I’ll be updating my portfolio and fiddling around with the blog as well so if you stop by and things look a bit wonky, please pardon the dust! Don’t forget to become a fan of 225 Photography on Facebook to get all the news, last minute model calls, specials, etc!

I am now booking for February and March. If you’re interested in booking a Spring session please give me a call or send me an email. And while I’m not scheduling any sessions for the remainder of January, maternity and newborns are the exception and will always be fit in.

And because no post is complete without a photo, I’ve included one from the 365 project I’m taking part in where I take a picture every single day for one year and post it to my personal blog. I’m sure you’ll be seeing more of these in the future as I’ve got 347 more days to go.

end of a decade

it wasn’t until new year’s eve that i realized that we’ll be starting not only a new year, but a new decade as well. this hit me hard and ever since i was struck by this thought, i’ve been pondering it. i’ve spent hours thinking about this decade that has just ended and what i’d like to accomplish in this new decade.

the odd thing is that waking up on new year’s day, the first day of this new, shiny decade (new car smell anyone?), it felt like any old day. i woke up grumpy, i stumbled to the kitchen to begin the morning routine of coffee for mama, breakfast for the kidlets. doesn’t really seem like the appropriate way to start a brand new decade does it?

looking back at the last decade, i realize how much my life has changed, how very different it is from the life i had envisioned for myself and had planned for. in the last ten years i have:

married a man who became my best friend
quit my job
quit grad school
put my dissertation in a box in the back of a closet under lots and lots of stuff
moved from a historic home in the process of being renovated in new orleans to baton rouge
bought and later sold a cute little cottage
learned to live without having any true blue girlfriends in the same city
gave birth to four amazingly beautiful children
started homeschooling
started a business

it doesn’t seem so monumental when i write it out like that but if you know me, you know i am an inveterate list maker and compared to the über-detailed mental list i keep, this is small. and yet, each one of these things has helped to shape me and make me who i am today as i embark on this new decade. i’m excited about the prospects of a new year and i’ve thought a lot about 2010 and carefully chosen my one little word for 2010. so you know what i’m going to do to get ready for this new decade? i’m going to make a list of goals (i know, i know, i’m predictable) for my body, my spirit, my family, my business, my house, and for this decade (to include: getting back to paris, exploring venice with my husband, opening a studio, to name a few).

so just a few things i’d like to do this year:
photograph a birth (home or hospital)
get a photo session done of my little family
start using my polaroid camera
update my website
keep my inbox at zero five of seven days/week
have a date night with my hubby at least once a month
take a vacation with my five favorite people (that would be husband and four children for those trying to figure it out)
let my kids spend as much time with my grandparents as i possibly can
find a family truly in need and bless them with a session and prints

and since no post is complete without pictures, i’ve posted a couple of pictures from christmas at my aunt’s house. she decorates her house beautifully from top to bottom (even our room had a wee christmas tree in it!) and even patiently tolerated my little nacho’s constant re-decorating of the lower third of the tree. about two minutes after we got home, unloaded the car and started unpacking the poulette said, “that was the best christmas ever! can we go back next year?” i’d say that christmas was definitely a success!

i hope you all have a very happy, very blessed new year and new decade!

tuesdays unwrapped | baton rouge child photographer

these were taken on a friday afternoon. a friday afternoon of a busy week with sessions and editing and deadlines and staying up until 2a.m. too many nights in a row so i could have everything done before i left for thanksgiving. i took the red bean to her riding lesson and sat there mentally going over my to-do list, the frog prince was watching another rider, the nacho was in his stroller eating snacks and i realized i hadn’t heard the poulette’s chattering in a while. looking up i saw her dancing, singing softly to herself, lost in reverie and it was absolutely magical to watch.

eta: for those that emailed and asked, we found her boots at target. she is insanely fond of them. and no, the ensemble is her creation — my husband and i are firm believers in letting them have an active role in choosing what to wear each day. sometimes the combos are a bit much but they always make us smile.

all i want for christmas

december already!?!

Things will be quieter here on the blog as this is my last week of work for the year of 2009! I have orders coming in every day and I’m getting them delivered as quickly as I can — I should probably just get a brown uniform and brown truck! Beginning Monday, I will be taking the remainder of the month off, as well as part of January so I can spend some time with my family. I am now booking February 2010 and beyond. Thanks everyone for an amazing 2009!
